Book With a Message

Dr. Javed Jamil is a distinguished scholar whose recent works have ensured him a place in the foremost ranks of Islamic thinkers. A doctor by profession, he has made his mark in such diverse areas as literature, natural and medical sciences, theology and social work. He has published many works, which have won universal accolade from theologians, political and social activists and intellectuals. Dr. Javed Jamil is the founder Director of PEACE - an organization committed to universal peace and brotherhood. A staunch devotee of peace at all levels, even aggressive in its pursuit, Dr. Jamil is a noble oddity in his profession. A product of one of the most renowned medical institutions of Asia, King George’s Medical College, Lucknow, the doctor in him is not content with simply prescribing medicine for the ills plaguing the human body; but remains totally absorbed in discovering curative and preventive solutions for the ills plaguing the moral, social and spiritual life of today’s man. Still in his early forties, Dr. Jamil has already made a mark for his creative and investigative works. To this end, he wields his pen as often and as effectively as his stethoscope. Dr. Jamil has so far authored many books on various subjects and his book ‘the essence of the divine verses’ was released by former prime minister Mr. I.K. Gujral. But his latest book the killer sex is being regarded as a marvel by many scholars including Kuldip Nayar, eminent journalist, Prof. S Sachidananda Mohanty, well-known writer and professor of Osmania University, Hyderabad and Saiyid Hamid, Chancellor, Hamdard University. Speaking to Islamic Voice, Dr Javed throws light on his latest book.

What influenced you to write this book?

Since I started working for the prevention of AIDS about 7 years back, I had started feeling that the subject of modern sexuality needs a through investigation. While writing “The Devil of Economic Fundamentalism”, I decided that I must write a separate book on the role of the economic fundamentalists, particularly the corporate world in the development of modern sexuality, and its devastating effects on society.

When did you start working on it?

I started working on it in the month of February 2003 and it was completed in August; that means it took me just 5 months to complete it.

What was your process?

I first gathered the relevant data through authentic sources available on the Internet, and then started writing on it. I wanted the book to be a combination of creative and investigative work.

Was writing it a happy experience?

I regard it as a revolutionary work and I view it as the beginning of a big movement against economic fundamentalism, and commercialization of sex. I am happy the way the work shaped. It is of equal interest to those who have interest in socio-economics and religion, as well as those who have a literary bent of mind.

It gives an impression that the whole transformation of today’s society that we are living in into its corrupt state has been meticulously planned and masterminded by the economic fundamentalists. Was it the case? It didn’t happen naturally influenced by the changing trends?

This is the basic theme of the book. It does not just discuss the adverse effects of modern sexuality on society, it unveils the faces of the economic fundamentalists who have been masterminding this huge change, which has transformed sex from a tool of life to an instrument of business. As part of their strategy, they have been trying to make people feel that this transformation has been natural and spontaneous. But the truth is that the role of the big business is too big and too sinister to ignore. Society is not changing itself, but is being made to change in a particular direction, and every possible step is being taken to accelerate that change. .Law, politics, education, media-everything is being used for the purpose.

How was the feedback from the west as you have targeted them quite daringly?

Interestingly, American women have been showing great enthusiasm towards the book. One, Stephanie Crane wrote to me that the book must be made compulsory for every American above 13. Almost everyone who read it felt the subject needed a renewed debate. In US, women are now feeling the brunt of the so-called Sexual revolution. I have found most of them hating American men due to their corrupt behaviour. They feel that women have been forced or lured into unhealthy sexual behaviour by men and the big business.

Even though you have admitted it that most of the words in this book are yours, still you have included the name of Adrienne Hughes as a co-author. Was it to safeguard yourself from the people you were attacking?

Adrienne’s role was crucial in many ways. She was so impressed with the theme of the work that she not only encouraged me to write it as soon as possible, but also gathered relevant data for me. She also contributed a chapter based on excerpts from a personal diary. And yes, I felt her inclusion as co-author will increase its credibility in the eyes of the people in the Western world, as well as readers in India.

Even though the title of the book is quite appropriate and maybe catchy for a few but it is taboo and many people would think twice before touching it. Have you given it a thought before deciding the title?

I chose the title purposely. Most of the people tend to take the word “killer” in its notorious sense, but I want them to know that modern sexuality has literally turned sex into a killer. Nothing else now kills as many people, devastates as many women and children and creates such problems in society as sex creates. And this is the direct result of the development of modern sexuality under the auspices of the corporate world who have found in sex the greatest money-spinner.

Rand Corporation Study
By A Staff writer

The violence between the Shias and Sunnis broke out in Lucknow on 20th Feb, after a gap of about two decades. It used to erupt largely on account of objections over the route of Shia mourning processions during Muharram. However, following an agreement over these routes a few years ago, there was no cause of tension between the two sides. Well known Shia cleric Maulana Kalbe Jawaad termed the clashes as “an outcome of some deep-rooted conspiracy to forge a divide between the two Muslim sects, who had sworn to stay united after realising the futility of the age old infighting”.

It is no coincidence that in a recent study “US Strategy in the Muslim World after 9/11” it is suggested that Arab - Non-Arab divide, as also Shia - Sunni differences be exploited to promote the US agenda in the Muslim World.

The study also called for reforms in Madrassa and Mosques, and has proposed that the government should appoint Imams in all mosques to suppress anti-US feelings. The report concludes that the “future direction of the Muslim World will profoundly affect vital security interests”. It is precisely this concern to control the future direction of the Muslim World, that is guiding neo-con policy planners to politically dominate the Middle East in the name of ‘democratic change’ and ‘war against terror’.

Reports from USA’s prestigious think- tanks, Rand Corporation. examines the dynamics leading to religious and political changes in the Muslim world, particularly its “religio-politics” in which relations with God provide shape and meaning to political action and orientations and the implications of these developments for U.S. and Western interests.

This Rand Corporation study has several purposes: (1) to develop a typology of ideological tendencies in the different regions of the Muslim world, in order to identify the sectors with which the United States can find common ground to promote democracy and stability and counter the influence of extremist and violent groups; (2) to identify the factors that produce religious extremism and violence; (3) to identify the key cleavages and fault lines among sectarian, ethnic, regional, and national lines and to assess how these cleavages generate challenges and opportunities for the United States; and (4) to identify possible strategies and sets of political and military options to help the United States meet challenges and exploit opportunities presented by changed conditions in the Muslim world. Research on this project was completed in 2003.

Chapter six, of the Rand Corporation study, titled ‘Islam in India’ points out two fault lines which can benefit for the USA foreign policy interest in the regions. First conflict between Shia-Sunni and second, the Kashmir issue.
