Dr. Anwar Shaikh Bags - Best Commerce Teacher Award
By A Staff Writer

When we talk about our favourite teacher, we fantasize him to be our mentor, our role model. Even today, we have teachers who are considered as mentors or role models for their students.

Teachers like Dr. Anwar Shaikh, Reader in the Department of Commerce at Anjuman Khairul Islam’s Poona College of Arts, Science and Commerce are role models for today’s generation. Dr. Anwar Shaikh has been recently conferred with the “Prof. G.B.Kulkarni Best Teacher in Commerce Award” instituted by the University of Pune. The award was given away by Vice Chancellor, Dr. Narendra Jadhav, at the University Foundation Day. Every year this award is given to one commerce teacher under the jurisdiction of Pune University.

What makes Dr Anwar different from the rest is his interest in the empowerment of students belonging to the deprived sections of the society. For this purpose, he initiated the Sir Syed Ahmed Khan Foundation (SSAK). “The main aim of the Foundation is to work for social and educational upliftment of slum dwellers and residents in rural areas in Maharashtra,” he said. “Today, unemployment is a very complex problem among youth. This poses a grave threat to the social and political stability,” he adds.

SSAK Foundation is now working in slums in Pune. The core goal of the Foundation is to increase awareness among the target population about their rights and privileges and to prepare the students for formal education. Dr. Shaikh is associated with several educational and social institutions. He has organised various seminars for students on Entrepreneurship Development, Self Employment and Information Technology.

Dr Anwar’s Ph.D Thesis was adjudged the “Best Ph.D thesis in Cooperative Management” by the Indian Society for Studies in Cooperation, and Dr. Shaikh was also conferred with the “Rao Bahadur Talmaki Award”.
