Bilal Ahmad Mir, is a fragile figure with serene eyes. I met him at his Sanat Nagar residence. Son of a retired forest Range Officer and a housewife, Bilal Ahmad is the first Kashmiri civil Engineer who is credited with having developed the “Analytical Equation Method.”
Bilal cultivated his interest in a subject that is most dreaded and hated among the majority of student community. Bilal started his tryst with this subject when he was studying in the 12th standard in Srinagar. He encountered the Quadatics and Rangakutta methods of problem solving. He then went to the Ghousia College of Engineering, Bangalore to complete his B.E in civil engineering between 1996-2005.
It was during this period that he researched, devised and discovered the “Solution of Analytical Equation” which is used in various subjects in civil engineering especially in the theory of structures and strength of materials. It took him six years of hard work.
Explaining the merits of Analytical Equation(A.E) Bilal says it can be used to solve following type of mathematical problems. X2-3x+2=0, aMx+bM=0,
x1/2 +9x-84=0 or x3 +4x-3=0 etc.
Bilal asserts that his method of solving difficult problems contains lesser calculations and gives accurate results unlike other methods such as Cardons', Newton vapson, quadratic,Hornars etc. “AE method always gives us perfect value not an appropriate one. This method is a boon for students appearing in different entrance examinations as it gives them an added advantage in contrast to the old methods,” he says.
Bilal felt the method still had certain shortcomings which needed to be corrected. After the rectification of errors, he submitted his method to the Bangalore University which approved his method on August 14, 2002.Then after its approval Bilal sent it to Kashmir University(K.U), sent letters to IIT Kanpur, but the response was lukewarm . The application which he submitted before KU in 2005 was sent to National Institute Of Technology(NIT) Hazratbal,Srinagar, but again with no progress and all the officials, readers and departmental heads maintained a criminal silence.
Bilal does not fail to express his gratitude to Dr P.K Srimani, Reader Department of Mathematics at Bangalore University who unlike all others took a personal interest in Bilal's research and credited it with approval.
In August 2007, Bilal sent an application to Ghousia College seeking approval of his research. The reply came in the favour of encouraging and congratulating him for his hardwork ,research and discovery, but nothing regarding the approval of research.
“The AE method is particularly helpful in Fluid Mechanics, a subject taught in civil engineering.
It gives an alternative method to solve quadratic equation whose roots are equal. It is used in mechnical engineering like Poldon-Wheel,” says Bilal.
His dream is to make mathematics easy for students so that more and more students are encouraged to deal with the subject positively and are not afraid of it. Bilal himself is a teacher to students of graduation level and he feels that teaching skills also contribute towards making the subject easy and it is the responsibility of a teacher to realise and tap the potential of students He wishes to have a library and reading room to be developed in Srinagar dedicated to Arithmetic studies.
To quell the fear many have towards Maths, Bilal suggests that there is no alternative for hard work and only through regular, but extensive practice one can master the subject and develop a life long relationship with it.
