E-Ethics Day

‘Stay online ethically for better tomorrow’, with this message, the Students Islamic Organisation of India (SIO) celebrated E-Ethics Day on September 1, 2005 across the nation. The purpose of this one day campaign was to address mounting Cyber evils and their awful physical, psychological, social and economical impact and to educate the students about the same.

PG Courses at Al-Ameen College

Higher education has been the focus of the Al Ameen Educational Society. Recently the College opened new courses-M.B.A, M.C.A and M.Sc (Microbiology) and M.Sc (Biotech). Inaugurating these PG programmes for 2005-2006, Dr M.S.Thimmappa, Vice-Chancellor, Bangalore University asserted that youngsters should encompass all aspects of life and strive to uphold their values in all circumstances.

English Workshop at Bijapur

The SECAB Pre-University College here organised a one-day workshop on English teaching on August 20, 2005. Mr R. P. Chavan, Deputy Director of the Pre University Education urged the teachers to adopt current, modern and effective teaching methods. Mr. Shamshuddin A. Punekar, chairman of SECAB lamented that due to deficiency in teaching at the primary level, the children suffer in the language in higher classes. Resource persons, G. B. Sajjan, M. R. L. Doddapattar and A. S. Lanchayani discussed the issues involved in English teaching. S. A. Shaikh screened the CD based programmes for English teaching.

Ahmed Moosa Mosque

The ‘Ahmed Moosa Mosque’ was consecrated here on September 17, inside the campus of the Ghousia Engineering College. Maulana Riyazur Rahman Rashadi, peshimam of the Jama Masjid of Bangalore city led the inaugural Asr prayer. Mrs. Zainab Bi Ahmed Moosa donated the money for the construction of the mosque which would facilitate the prayers for the students and staff members of the Ghousia College.

AFMI Honours Sam Pitroda, P. M. Sayeed, Mushirul Hasan

Some of India’s best and hardworking visionaries, social workers and educationists were honoured at the annual convention of the American Federation of Muslims of Indian Origin (AFMI) held here on September 17, at Southfork Ranch. The conveners announced the proposal to launch an ‘All India Muslim Education Board’ to give a united platform to various bodies working towards the cause of the educational upliftment of Indian Muslims.


Dr. Sam Pitroda, chairman of the National Knowledge Commission, was awarded the ‘Pride of India Award’ for his visionary approach in utilising technology for grassroots sustainable development. Receiving the award, Pitroda emphasised the role of technology in solving the problems and urged organisations like AFMI to play a leading role in such an endeavour. Union Minister for Power, P. M. Sayeed was given the ‘Award of Excellence’ for his services in the causes of social justice. Prof. Mushirul Hasan, historian and vice-chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia, Dr. Abusaleh Shariff, chief economist at the National Council of Applied Economic Research (and Secretary of the Indian Prime Minister’s High Level Committee preparing a report on the status of the Muslim Community of India), Syed Sadaqath Peeran of Al Ameen Educational Society, Bangalore, Ms. Farida Hussain, All India Women’s Conference, Hyderabad, and Mr. Abid Abedi, CEO, Adea Solutions, were conferred with the excellence awards for their services in the cause of education and entrepreneurship.


Social workers and artistes Ms. Nandita Das and Farooque Sheikh also spoke at the conference and called for empowerment of people in India and eradication of illiteracy, poverty and backwardness. Akram Syed, President-elect of AFMI called for equity, education and entrepreneurship for sustainable development and called upon the NGOs working in the field of education to partner with AFMI to realise the common goal of “Education for All”. AFMI will hold this year’s India convention in Kanpur in December, 2005.

The fifth Annual Athletic Sports Meet of Oasis International School was held on September 10, at the Mount Carmel College Stadium. Syed Zameer Pasha, Commissioner and Managing Director, Karnataka State Agriculture Marketing Board was the guest of honour.
