AFMI Honours Sam Pitroda, P. M. Sayeed, Mushirul Hasan

Some of India’s best and hardworking visionaries, social workers and educationists were honoured at the annual convention of the American Federation of Muslims of Indian Origin (AFMI) held here on September 17, at Southfork Ranch. The conveners announced the proposal to launch an ‘All India Muslim Education Board’ to give a united platform to various bodies working towards the cause of the educational upliftment of Indian Muslims.
Dr. Sam Pitroda, chairman of the National Knowledge Commission, was awarded the ‘Pride of India Award’ for his visionary approach in utilising technology for grassroots sustainable development. Receiving the award, Pitroda emphasised the role of technology in solving the problems and urged organisations like AFMI to play a leading role in such an endeavour. Union Minister for Power, P. M. Sayeed was given the ‘Award of Excellence’ for his services in the causes of social justice. Prof. Mushirul Hasan, historian and vice-chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia, Dr. Abusaleh Shariff, chief economist at the National Council of Applied Economic Research (and Secretary of the Indian Prime Minister’s High Level Committee preparing a report on the status of the Muslim Community of India), Syed Sadaqath Peeran of Al Ameen Educational Society, Bangalore, Ms. Farida Hussain, All India Women’s Conference, Hyderabad, and Mr. Abid Abedi, CEO, Adea Solutions, were conferred with the excellence awards for their services in the cause of education and entrepreneurship.
Social workers and artistes Ms. Nandita Das and Farooque Sheikh also spoke at the conference and called for empowerment of people in India and eradication of illiteracy, poverty and backwardness. Akram Syed, President-elect of AFMI called for equity, education and entrepreneurship for sustainable development and called upon the NGOs working in the field of education to partner with AFMI to realise the common goal of “Education for All”. AFMI will hold this year’s India convention in Kanpur in December, 2005.
