Visionary with a Mission

From setting up an Academy for Civil services exams to human rights organization, Maulana Fazlur Rahim is showing the way, how Muslims can best use their intellect.

Maulana Mohammed Fazlur Rahim Mujaddidi was born on 22nd June, 1957. He is an Aalim from Nadwatul Ulama Lucknow. Son and Successor of the great Sufi scholar and educationist Hazrat Maulana Shah Mohammad Abdur Rahim Mujaddidi and successor of another great Sufi Hazrat Maulana Shah Hidayat Ali Mujaddidi, Maulana Fazlur Rahim has been member of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, member of the All India Waqf Council and member of the Aligarh Muslim University Court. In 1994, he was elected as Chairman of the “Jamea-Tul-Hidaya”. The Jamea-Tul-Hidaya is the first residential Islamic University, which introduced technical and modern education in Madrasas. The foundation stone of the University was laid in 1976 and in 1986, the university started its full-fledged education system.  In 1996, realising the need of modern primary education, he floated another Trust named “Maulana Abdur Rahim Educational Trust” and started working on a series of English Medium Schools named “Imam Rabbani Public School”. The schools are recognized by the State Government Educational Board.  In 2001, realizing the need to increase Muslim Representation in Indian Administration, an independent body the “Crescent Academy for Civil Services Exams” was formed.  In 2002, the Foundation for Civil Liberties, a Human Rights Organization was formed for Human rights, education and Judicial Redress and the same year, the first Center, Crescent Academy Aligarh, was established at Ayesha Cottage, ADM Compound Road, near Admin Block of Aligarh Muslim University Aligarh. Motivated with the results of the Aligarh Center, he established 3 new centers at Lucknow and Delhi. Under the mass awareness program for Civil Services Exams he started “Talent Hunting Programme” and in 2006, the “Strive for Educational Enhancement” (SEE) was formed for the cause of modern primary to senior secondary education.

Action Plan for Primary Education

Project: “From drop-outs into professionals”
Project Name: Vision 2015
Primary Education
Viability: 2000+ students

Establishment of Primary Schools at all possible and promising locations with the following norms.

Main object:

Development and rearing of the child keeping in view the limitations of the existing environment. The basic emphasis will be on attaining fluency in languages, Maths skill, Urdu and theology. The students passing out 5th class should be well versed in understanding the basic skills of the subjects taught to them. They should be able to accommodate themselves in any school, irrespective of the standard and medium of instruction.

Infrastructure:

• Preferably to be launched in Masajid, Madaris or a space provided by well-wishers and supporters.

• Least possible furniture.

• Management to pay water and electricity charges.

Medium of Instruction:

• A well- balanced fusion of English and vernacular languages. However, Maths terminology will be explained in a way so that the concepts are clear and the fundamentals are fully assimilated and digested by the student.

• While teaching English, importance will not be laid only on the accumulation of vocabulary. Instead, the finer aspects of the language will be communicated to the student by making him aware of the ways to express emotions and particularly verb patterns. As far as possible, the student will be kept away from the complexities of grammar.

• No grammar in Hindi and Urdu

• Maths work/book will be in English.

Academics:

• Teaching of only 5 subjects: Maths, English, Hindi, Urdu and Theology.

• Duration of a period: 45 Minutes.

• Minimum 240 periods for every subject.

• The cycle of education will comprise of 6 years: Preparatory (1year) + 1 to 5 classes (5 years).

• Age of the student should be above 4 years.

• Books and reading material will be provided at subsidized rates.

• Teacher’s salaries and other administrative expenses to be born by   the management.

• Subsidised Fee Structure

Examination System:

• Monthly tests along with separate and teacher’s independent assessment before every monthly test.

• Students will be promoted on monthly tests and assessment basis.

• Attendance should be above 70 per cent.

Books:

• Hazrat Maulana Mohd. Fazlur Rahim Mujaddidi Jaipur has got the English and Maths books developed, designed on the norms stated above. Initially Urdu, Hindi and Theology books will be picked up from the market. However, if need be, the reading material for other subjects may be developed by ourselves.

Quality Education:

To attain the target of ideal quality education, we need to concentrate on following factors along with a focus on its due share (for primary education)

• Teachers 40 per cent

• Management Monitoring System 25 per cent

• Reading Material 30 per cent

• Home Environment 05 per cent

The reading material has been developed employing the efforts and hard work of the experts of the field. Therefore it is not very difficult to train the conscientious teachers according to the needs and spirit of syllabus and reading material.

It is an unfortunate fact that we generally lag far behind in the field of Management Monitoring System as well as building a home environment which may be conducive to the personality development of the child. And, at this juncture of time, it is above anybody’s control. However, it is also a matter of satisfaction that in respect of primary education the home environment does not have a major effect, its share being only 5 per cent and that can be overlooked. The major question is bout the management. We have to direct our maximum efforts towards this factor, as all the other factors proportionally depend on this factor.

Teachers:

• Crescent Academy under the leadership of Hazrat Maulana will help in selecting and training the teachers.

• One week training will be sufficient for one subject.

Reading Material:

• Already available for Maths and English.

• Modification is possible depending upon the local requirements and suggestions.

• The System of Examination has been mentioned above.

Home environment:

• Not in our control and every thing is designed in such a way that its effect should be negligible.

Management Monitoring System (MMS):

• The most crucial area.

• We suggest installation of a computer network at the main office.

• Acquire proven and tested School Management Software from any reputed company. Dreamteam Software used by Hazrat Maulana’s Schools, DPS and Central Schools is recommended. However other Software my also be considered.

• The Monthly Data from all the schools is to be collected at the main office.

• The Monthly Reports regenerated through the computer should be followed up by the paid supervisors.

• The supervisors have to submit their action- taken report to the management.

• Management will take speedy and appropriate decisions on the report submitted by the Supervisor’s action- taken report.

• Three meetings in one academic year should be sufficient using MMS.

If it could be possible to secure above 80 per cent marks in all the three areas: Teachers, Reading Material and MMS, leaving aside the  home environment, there are good reasons to believe that majority of the students will be able to get A+ grade.

Sr. Secondary Education

The Sachar Committee Report clearly mentions   that the Muslims educational bottleneck is Sr. Secondary. Maximum crucial drop-out of the Muslim Students takes place at this level. Therefore, we have to put up our utmost efforts to remove this bottleneck.

Brilliant and intelligent students passing out primary level should be accommodated for middle to sr. secondary stage. This may be accomplished in two ways:

1. Establish our own Schools: if it is feasible establish Sr. Secondary Schools fulfilling the criterion of Accessibility, Affordability and Quality. The scheme and strategy of the system will be slightly different from that of the Primary education strategy.

2. Education Adoption:
• Adopt students passing out from Primary level. Make sure to avoid these children being exploited as a labor force by the parents or as bread-earners of the family.

• Make use of the facilities of the existing schools and get them admitted in near- by schools.

• Use the MMS for monitoring and evaluating the performance of the adopted students.

• Do not pressurize them for any thing else, other than education.

Professional Education

• Use the existing set-up of professional colleges. Prepare the Students and get them admitted through competition.

• Establish and use the network of minority colleges for the admission of these students.

• Establish study- centers and utilize the facilities and services of Open Education System.
