This is with reference to your issue of January 2004 in which the pathetic conditions of Muslim children in zari industries was covered superbly by M. Hanif Lakdawala . It was really painful to read the plight of these kids. I am much disturbed and distressed. The welfare schemes and NGO activities among Muslims are not very active. Such programmes are not encouraged positively. Even investigation reports are also not being attempted and exposed. Thanks to Hanif for his useful write up in the front page, awakening the conscience of the readers. In this regard, I wish to put forth my view. Crores of rupees are being spent by Muslims for rites and rituals and building new structures and additional complexes for Madrassas and prayers. We have enough buildings for religious activities. So, such non -recurring expenditure should be immediately withdrawn. Atleast Rs.50,000 crores worth properties of Wakf in each state are being mismanaged. Utilising this will be a boon to social activities. Many Muslims are working in the Gulf countries earning and sending crores of rupees to India and the utility of this is not checked at all. A. R.
