The Zari Kids are Not Shining!

This is with reference to your issue of January 2004 in which the pathetic conditions of Muslim children in zari industries was covered superbly by M. Hanif Lakdawala . It was really painful to read the plight of these kids. I am much disturbed and distressed. The welfare schemes and NGO activities among Muslims are not very active. Such programmes are not encouraged positively. Even investigation reports are also not being attempted and exposed. Thanks to Hanif for his useful write up in the front page, awakening the conscience of the readers. In this regard, I wish to put forth my view. Crores of rupees are being spent by Muslims for rites and rituals and building new structures and additional complexes for Madrassas and prayers. We have enough buildings for religious activities. So, such non -recurring expenditure should be immediately withdrawn. Atleast Rs.50,000 crores worth properties of Wakf in each state are being mismanaged. Utilising this will be a boon to social activities. Many Muslims are working in the Gulf countries earning and sending crores of rupees to India and the utility of this is not checked at all. A. R. Muslim Leaders are Fast Asleep

I am a regular reader of Islamic Voice. I am a Class I officer in Madhya Pradesh. Here the condition of Muslims is pathetic. They are very poor and there is no strong leadership too. In your publication, most of the coverage is from South India, so why don't you also cover North India. In India, Muslims can prosper only when their share in administration and politics will increase. This can be done with the help of the Tableeghi Jamaat and mass awareness and increase in the literacy rate among the Muslims. What happened in Gujarat can happen anywhere, but still Muslim leaders and intellectuals are sleeping. So my suggestion is that Islamic Voice should take up burning issues affecting the community. Are Muslim Countries Islamic?

Congratulations to Asghar Ali Engineer for his elegant and constructive views in " Islam and the Concept of Power" published in the January 2004 issue of Islamic Voice. There is no denial of the fact that it is a misnomer to call the Muslim countries as Islamic nations. Recent surveys of UNO have ranked some of the so-called Muslim countries among the most corrupt nations in the world. Since there is no relationship between Islam and corruption, obviously, such countries are not Islamic Republics as is often claimed by some of them. However the basic question is, if the believers of Islam are denied the practice of their faith freely and fearlessly, then Islam encourages the establishment of a secure and legitimate state. It was the case at the time of the Prophet (Pbuh) and during the regimes of the pious Khalifas. Akhtar Mahmood, Chandigarh

Good Journal

I visited the Islamic Peace Exhibition in Chennai and picked up a copy of Islamic Voice. I enjoyed its tone, liberal views and excellent English. I am planning a series of Peace and Value Education textbooks for the children of India. I work for Oxford University Press, a big and traditional publisher. Cover Stories are Great

I am a regular reader of Islamic Voice for the last many years. I find the monthly very educative and informative, especially the columns - Our Dialogue, Quran Speaks, Hadith, Journey to Islam and the articles by Dr Zakir Naik and Asghar Ali Engineer. It is a great pleasure to read the cover story and features by Mohammed Hanif Lakdawala. The special column -"insights" by M.A. Siraj should be a regular column. Life will be better for readers if those front page advertisements are taken off and printed in the inside pages. K A Razak Amayur, Kerala

Some Books Please

We are writing to you from Mumbai. The Islamic Sisters Association, ISA, is a circulating Islamic English Library which is a personal effort of five Muslim, college- going sisters, Alhumdulillah. We are a non-registered Library. We run it through our homes where (only) sisters call us and ask for books and then the books are delivered to them for a period of 2-3 weeks, we also hold video shows of Islamic speakers, we also undertook a project whereby we distributed about 500 cassettes of Islamic Songs (Nasheed) to youngsters, free of cost, along with which we gave a hand written letter prepared by us, explaining to them as to why Islam forbids music and that we have a better alternative to the Haram Music that we listen to. We are also working on our new project called "The Making Of A Muslimah", a 20 day workshop especially for the Muslim Sisters. We are only college going students, we wanted your help and support in adding some books to our library which, at present contains about 300 books, 18 video tapes, 5 different Qaris on audio, 7 VCD's, various translations of the Holy Qur'an with tafsir. If there is anyway that readers can help us with some books for the Library, it will be of a great help. Our postal address is as follows : Islamic Sisters Association, Azmi Farzeen, 2, Sentinal House, Fourth flr, Haji Niyaz Ahmed Azmi Marg, Colaba, Mumbai - 400005.
