Are You Soft-Hearted?
-By Nigar Ataulla
It is not righteousness that ye turn your faces towards east or west, but it is righteousness-to believe in Allah and the Last Day and the Angels, and the Book and the Messengers, to spend of your substance, out of love for Him, for your kin, for orphans, for the needy, for the wayfarer, for those who ask and for the ransom of slaves, to be steadfast in prayer and practice regular charity, to fulfill the contracts which ye have made, and to be firm and patient in pain or suffering and adversity and throughout all periods of panic. Such are the people of truth, the Allah-fearing. - Quran (2-177).
When adversity strikes us, we fervently turn towards Allah and pray extra hard. Adversities come in various forms and bad health is one of the worst form of adversity. It not only makes a person physically weak, but tagged to it is a baggage of mental worries-most important being the hefty bills.
Put yourself in the place of a person who has been afflicted with a serious ailment like IHD (ISCHEAMIC HEART DISEASE)-sounds dreadful? It is a matter to worry as this requires surgery. When this ailment affects a person who has no means to meet the expense for such a surgery, what does he do? He may first turn to his friends for help or he may turn to his officials for help. But when he is cold-shouldered by both the sources, he may turn helpless.
That is exactly the case with Imam M.K Rahman. Doing the good deed of leading the prayers in Jamia Masjid Yelhanka, 48 year-old Imam Rahman is suffering from Ischeamic Heart Disease and his condition requires emergency Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting Surgery, according to renowned Cardio-thoracic surgeon, Dr F. Sadruddin Shariff who will be performing the surgery on January 10, 2004. inshallah.
It is sad that the society looks the other way when a person is ill and deems him "unsuitable" due to his health. Imam Rahman is now out of his job due to his illness.
With a family of three daughters and three sons, to take care of, he has now no source of income. So the hefty expense of Rs 1,04,000 for the surgery has become Imam Rahman's nightmare. But the surgery has to be done if he has to live a normal life and get back to his duty as an Imam at the mosque.
As Muslims, New Year holds no significance to us except that it's the start of a fresh year. We may make resolutions and plans for the year. We may have our dreams and ambitions. But is life all about living only for ourselves? For once try doing something for somebody else and feel the peace in your heart this new year.
Imam Rahman needs your generous help, apart from your prayers. Just open out your hearts a little more this New Year and contribute for a cause that will help Imam Rahman be his healthy, cheerful self all over again after the surgery.
