An Eco-Friendly Bakrid
Tragedy of a Naked Emperor

An Eco-Friendly Bakrid

A month from now we will be, Insha Allah, celebrating Eidul Azha, or what is known in common parlance as Bakrid. But have we ever thought of observing it in an eco-friendly way. Being eco-friendly is just one of the two concerns. A more important aspect is to conduct ourselves in a way that our practices do not hurt others. This is more special as we live amidst a people among whom vegetarianism forms the core of their belief system, if not lifestyle for a vital section.

“Sacrifice could be a sacred ritual for a Muslim, but it is just the slaughtering of an animal for others. It therefore demands that while seeking piety for ourselves, we are not oblivious to the urges of environment that affects all and care for others’ sensitivities too. It is one aspect of our faith that does not get endorsement from a considerable section of followers of faiths native to India. It is just the collective tolerance built within the society that allows us to observe practices that do not seem to be appreciated by several sections.

“It is in this spirit that the ritual of sacrificing (nay slaughtering) of animals is discharged in a collective form, mostly in farm houses, abattoirs or such other facilities where carcasses are processed in totality, and entrails are disposed off hygienically without inviting birds of prey. Care must be taken against leaving putrefying malodorous residues in the streets or flooding the gutters with blood of the slaughtered animals.

“In a world that is urbanising fast and civic space being shared by a cosmopolitan populace, there is less of basis for insisting upon every animal being slaughtered in confines of private homes. The sacrificial meat project of the Islamic Development Bank during the Hajj pilgrimage is one indication as to how a ritual that left a filthy mess behind, could be turned into a socially beneficial project with multiple bounties accruing to the society. “Should then we not opt for an eco-friendly Bakrid?

Tragedy of a Naked Emperor

The tragedy of a common American knows no end. He is being fooled by the wily George Bush and his neo-conservative coterie. He is yet to produce the much promised weapons of mass destruction (WMD), the very premise of war on Iraq. With even Saddam Hussein having been ferreted out of his hole, the US forces are far from proving that Iraq was a cockpit of conspiracies and terrorism. With body-bags arriving in increasing numbers, the end for US casualties and involvement is nowhere in sight. The Bush-Blair team is being asked by the world community to bear the cross alone. France and Germany were opposed from the beginning. Turkey’s half willingness to contribute troop melted in the wake of aggravating Kurd problem. Indians very intelligently decided not to jump in what is now a smouldering cauldron. Even Pakistan and Bangladesh decided not to incur Iraqi anger in lieu of a few US greenbacks. Japan flinched at the last moment. South Korea too has retraced its steps.

Americans were presented with the proposal to occupy Iraq wrapped in star and stripes. Patriotism of the anti-war activists was questioned. War drums drowned out the saner voices which are continually being challenged. There were only three hearings for the $ 87 billion being paid out by the Senate Appropriation Committee. US Ambassador to Iraq Paul L. Bremer refused to return to it, arrogantly declaring that he had more urgent duties in Baghdad.

The sheer force of the manipulative propaganda by the Zionist controlled media machine has silenced even the deliberative bodies from questioning the huge payout for military spendings and reconstruction. Rogues have ensured that the Emperor disrobes in public believing what the coterie says rather than what his eyes see or fail to see. The stultified faculties of judgement are leading him to go out naked in public and yet believe what his sycophants suggest.

Clearly, the Americans are being dragged out to condescendingly fulfil what a small coterie of vested interests is trying to foist on the hapless millions through its brainwashing techniques. Obviously, rationality seems to be a very restrictive commodity even in the US where propaganda rules the roost.

Should it not bring us to question the limitations of a democracy where monopolised media rather than the people employ their judgement?
