Haj Cash Cards

MAKKAH : The Haj Cash Cards were used on a limited scale during the Haj 1998. They were jointly floated by the Islamic World Organisation (WIO) and the American Express. The Haj Cash Cards are intended for facilitating cash transactions and payments during the Hajj season. The original concept came from WIO which first persuaded 16 banks in Arab and European capitals but failed to convince them. WIO Chief Khanzadeh Sajjad Khaliq said these banks failed to understand due to lack of international exposure. But the American Express Co. listened to him and acted.

The American Express provided the administrative support while WIO marketed it. Khaliq said the card operates like the plastic travellers cheques which could be loaded with cash in advance so that pilgrims would not have to borrow money.

Khaliq explained that most Hajis from humble backgrounds spend US dollars 1250 during the Hajj. They cannot sign cheques due to lack of basic education. The Haj Cash Card is made of plastic and is waterproof. The Card was launched during the Hajj 1998 with each card carrying $ 1000. However, the performance of the card is yet to be assessed. It enable the pilgrims to draw cash from banks and ATMS.
