Religion in Syllabus

Ref to the news in TOI about an “ All-Faith Syllabus for schools” (TOI, 23 Jan 2000), the government’s proposal to recast the existing syllabus with particular emphasis on values and morals, is a welcome step. Dr. Murli Manohar Joshi’s observation that secularism should not mean dissociation of education from religion, is timely. To give value-based and religion-oriented education is the need of the hour so that the lack of values in the youth can be rectified. Albeit, the proposed syllabus should not be made compulsory for all schools but the communities should be free to educate their students according to their own religious beliefs as per the fundamental rights granted by the constitution.

Article on 'Imam Khomeini'

I am shocked to see the portrait of a person i.e., Ayatollah Khomeini in your magazine (March 2000). It is very confusing to understand the kind of teaching you want to induce into our children. You must expose the deviant character of Shiism and so called revolutionary leader Imam Khomeini.

Moon Sighting

We are surprised to read the article "Moonsighting", Where Do We Err" by Maqbool Ahmed Siraj (Feb-2000). Some people are trying to use their common sense and brains to bypass the Sunnat and rectify our Holy Prophet (Pbuh). Our Prophet used his physical eyesight to see the new moon for the Ramadan and Eids and if Allah willed, he would have shown the new moon to His messenger. That's why during his lifetime Ramadan has 29 days sometimes and 30 days on other times. It has been this way for nearly 1420 years. Therefore we should not apply our brains and ruin our time in all these matters, instead devote time for dawah.

Know Your Basic Concepts

Article on Sir Syed Ahmed Khan by renowned historian Dr B Shaik Ali needs some basic conceptual correction. Dr Ali says in his article that Muslims had lost every thing but religion as a result of the Crusades. As a layman also I don't see any reason for frustration if a Muslim is deprived of every thing in defending the faith. As Iqbal says, "Woh zamane main muazziz thay musalman hoa kar Aur tum khar huay tarek-e-Quran ho kar." (Your ancestors attained the honour for they embraced the faith. You have lost all esteem because you lost Quran.) Please pass this message on to your Anglo-Muslim historian.
