Five
students of third year automobile engineering in Hindustan Electronics Academy,
in Bangalore have put together a bike as part of their dissertation project and
named it ‘Dirt Quad’, the name used by Americans. The vehicle can be used in
mountains, deserts and beaches for rescue operations and adventure. They say the
vehicle is patterned after a similar vehicle, used by American forces in
Afghanistan to carry arms and ammunition. Five boys, Koushik, Samarth, Sameer,
Dharmendar and Shiva who designed the vehicle, call it their “dream bike”.
The vehicle can be manoeuvred by even handicapped persons to ride on road. It is
ideal for patrolling on beaches. “The bike weighs 170 kg. and travels at a
speed of 80 km per hour. It has four wheels with a 100-cc TVS engine and can
travel 38 km per litre of fuel and costs around Rs. 35,000', says Shiva. “It
took three months to design this. We used a 2-stroke suzuki engine. We assembled
the bike and hammered into a fine shape with the help of our faculty members,”
says Koushik. Asked if they would patent it, Koushik said, since suzuki engine
has been used, it cannot be patented by them. However, the five boys are looking
for commercial propositions from the industry. They have to seek permission
under the Motors Vehicle Act to use the Dirt Quad on the roads. ‘The main
purpose of inventing the bike is for use as an ‘adventure bike’ and one
should have a great pleasure in riding it”, says Dharmendar.

TopElderly people around the globe are abused, ignored, deprived of their basic human rights and many live in abject poverty without a regular income or pension, according to the “State of the World’s Older People 2002", a survey of the elderly in 32 countries around the globe released in London recently. It was also found that the elderly are denied access to healthcare, education and training, ignored by the governments and policy makers and excluded from society. “ It is as if once you are 60 and above, you stop being treated as a human being,” said Tavengwa Nhongo of HelpAge International, which prepared the report. Older people are living in chronic poverty across the world, but it is worse in developing countries and Africa in particular. Their rights are continuously denied, they are abused, insulted, assaulted, murdered and raped in a number of situations. By 2050, the United Nations estimates that the number of people over 60 years old will reach two billion, but sadly the report says that governments and international donor agencies did not include the elderly in their budgets.
