Hubli: Jabbarkhan Honnali’s group emerged victorious in the fiercely contested Anjuman Islam election here on July 10. The group’s 52 candidates were elected to executive committee of the organization that runs 23 educational institutions including Nehru Degree College, three high schools, a polytechnic, an ITI and several other social, educational and charitable institutions in this second most important city of Karnataka. Honnali group secured 5,693 votes while the group led by former president Yusuf Savanur could secure only 3527 votes. There was a third group also in the fray led by Nazimuddin Hindasgeri, brother of former Karnataka minister Abdul Hakim Hindasgeri. They could bag 2,669 votes. Jabbarkhan Honnali, twice elected MLA and a former minister, had been dominating the Muslim social scene for nearly two decades. He held the president’s post of the Anjuman between 1996 and 2006. He was appointed hony. Secretary between 2006 and 2009 when N. D. Gadakkar was elected president.
The Anjuman has nearly 9,000 students on its rolls, with 350 employees and an annual budget running to the tune of Rs. 4 crore.
The powerful Anjuman has 17,000 voters. The polling was arranged at six places in the city and nearly 500 persons supervised the polling process. The city administration deployed three detachments of the Karnataka State reserve Police and four detachment of CAR.
The Anjuman’s institutions besides being partly aided, are also funded by the revenue generated by Anjuman’s Commercial complex in the city. Mr. Honnali has promised to set up an engineering college under the aegis of the Anjuman.
Mr. Honnali when contacted over phone by Islamic Voice said he was ailing and would be taking stock of the situation after recovering. He said there were several plans on board and there was a proposal for engineering college too.
The winner-takes-all seats pattern of election for the Anjuman allows one group to manage the institution for three years. There were allegations that one group
