The Office of the Development Commissioner of Handlooms under the Union Ministry of Textiles has invited nominations for National Award and Sant Kabir Award 2012 for outstanding weavers who have made valuable contributions in keeping alive the handloom heritage. National Award carries a sum of Rs. One lakh, certificate while the Sant Kabir Award carries Rs. Six lakhs, a gold coin, and a certificate. The latter will be presented to weavers who have previously won state awards or national merit certificate and are above 55 years. The applications should accompany ten specimens of the work by these master weavers. The Sant Kabir Award is instituted in the memory of famous Hindi mystic poet and saint from Varanasi who promoted a synthesis of Islam and Hinduism. The forms could be downloaded from www.handlooms, nic.in and the fill-in forms could be sent to any of the Weavers Service Centres located in various cities such as Vijaywada, Salem(Ph: 0427-2295323), Chennai (ph: 044-24918655), Guntur, Kancheepuram or 2-11th Main Road, Okalipuram, (near Kalyanamantap), Bangalore-560021 (Ph: 080-23121662). The last date of application is July 31, 2013.
