Mumbai: Socialist leader and former Maharashtra Minister Nihal Ahmed passed away in Nashik following age-related ailments on February 29. He was 90. Ahmed was the former Maharashtra Minister of Technical and Higher Education, state president of Janata Dal (Secular) and former legislator in the State Assembly for nearly three decades. Popularly known as ‘Nihalbhai’, he was also the first mayor of the Malegaon Municipal Corporation in 1954. His mortal remains were interred into Bara Sonapur Kabrastan.
Popularly known as ‘Nihalbhai’, he was also the first mayor of the Malegaon Municipal Corporation. A man who rose from among powerloom workers, Nihal Ahmed was a socialist and a scrupulously clean politician who kept away from all kinds of political gimmickry, chicanery, bribery. He was also the Leader of Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly from 1986-1989. He is survived by his wife, four sons and three daughters.
