UGC Sanction Rs. 26 Cr. for Girls Hostel at Jamia Millia

New Delhi: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has sanctioned a sum of Rs. 26 Crores to Jamia Millia Islamia under the General Development Scheme of 12th Plan for building Girls Hostel on the campus of Jamia Millia Islamia. This is by far one of the biggest grants that the university has received from the UGC for expanding living facilities for students, especially girl students on campus. Under the current admission policy, ten per cent of the total number of seats in each course are reserved for Muslim women applicants, which is leading to higher enrollment of girl students in the University. Additional hostel facilities for girl students will ensure that girl students coming from different parts of the country to study at Jamia will be able to find residential accommodation on the campus. Presently, the University has five girls’ hostels which have a total capacity of over 500. The hostels have facilities such as reading rooms, cyber café, pantry with gas connection, canteen cum utility store, fully automatic laundry, guest rooms, gymnasium, air-conditioned common rooms, and recreational open spaces. The additional amount of Rs. 26 crores will go a long way in expanding these hostel facilities for girls, said a press release from the Jamia.
