New Delhi: Thirty one Muslim candidates figure among the list of total 998 toppers of the UPSC examination 2012 who will be posted against vacancies in 27 key central services. Of the 998 toppers, 457 have been drawn from general pool. 295 have been picked up from 27% quota for OBCs while 169 are from scheduled caste and 77 from Scheduled tribes category. Currently there are 138 vacancies for Indian Administrative Services (IAS), 30 for Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and 150 Indian Police Service (IPS).

The representation of successful Muslim candidates makes up about 3.1 per cent.
The Aligarh based Crescent Academy claimed that 13 of the candidates coached at the Academy made it to the list of successful candidates. The Centre for Coaching and Career Planning of the Jamia Millia Islamia in a press release said 14 of its candidates, four among them Muslims, figure among the successful candidates.
Reached telephonically, Centre’s Director Prof. Anisur Rahman said the Centre was started two years ago with 100 intake each year. Last year seven of its candidates were successful. He said those aspiring to compete for the UPSC exams can receive coaching at the Centre at Jamia Millia. The Centre which is funded by the University Grants Commission, provides free accommodation and access to well equipped library. Of the 31, eleven candidates come from Jammu and Kashmir. Dr. Sehrish Asghar had cleared the Civil Services in 2012 itself and was placed at 118th position. Since it was an IPS posting, she sat for the exam again and improved her position to 23rd this year. Shaukat Ahmed Parray too had a repeat appearance and has improved his ranking to 41st position.
