State Calls on Centre to Withdraw Controversial Legislation

Bangalore: In a significant move, the Karnataka Assembly on March 19 unanimously passed a resolution rejecting the Waqf Amendment Bill, 2024, citing concerns over state autonomy and the potential centralization of Waqf board management. The resolution urged the Union government to reconsider the proposed amendments and engage in broader consultations with stakeholders.

Key Concerns Raised by Karnataka Lawmakers
• The bill could dilute the state’s control over Waqf assets and administration.
• It threatens the autonomy of Karnataka’s Waqf Board, potentially giving the Centre unchecked powers.
• The resolution emphasized the need for inclusive consultations before making changes to religious endowment laws.

Strong Opposition from State Leaders
Karnataka Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister HK Patil, who moved the resolution, stated that the entire House stood against the bill, calling it “against the universal aspirations of the people.” He urged the Union government to withdraw the legislation, warning of its far-reaching consequences.

National Support Against the Bill
Meanwhile, senior Congress leader and former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat voiced his support for the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), urging the BJP-led NDA government to take minority concerns seriously.

“The AIMPLB represents millions of people. Their objections should not be ignored,” Rawat stated, calling for a “minimum agreement” to ensure inclusivity and fairness in decision-making.

With growing opposition from state governments and political leaders, the pressure on the Centre to reconsider the bill continues to mount.
