Pope Francis passed away on April 21, 2025, at 7:35 a.m. local time in Vatican City. The death of Pope Francis at the age of 88 has sparked a wave of mourning across the Muslim world, where he was deeply respected for championing interfaith dialogue, human rights, and peace. Known for his strong stances against Islamophobia and wars, Pope Francis left a lasting legacy through efforts such as the historic “Document on Human Fraternity,” signed with the Grand Imam of Al Azhar, Ahmed El Tayyeb, in Abu Dhabi in 2019.
El Tayyeb expressed deep sorrow, calling Francis “a symbol of humanity,” and praised his tireless work for the marginalized and oppressed. Leaders across the Islamic world followed suit. Saudi Arabia’s King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman highlighted the Pope’s spiritual and humanitarian contributions, while Jordan’s King Abdullah II called him a humble and peace-loving figure.
Iraq’s Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani recalled their landmark meeting in Najaf, crediting Francis with playing a vital role in promoting global coexistence. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian echoed similar sentiments, noting the Pope’s defense of Palestinian rights and his stand against violence in Gaza.
Hamas, through senior official Bassem Naim, described Francis as a “strong supporter of the Palestinian people.” Although Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei remained silent, President Pezeshkian praised the Pope’s humanitarian stance, especially regarding Israeli actions in Gaza.
The Jewish community’s response was more reserved. Rome’s Chief Rabbi Richard Di Segni acknowledged Francis’ efforts to foster respectful Catholic-Jewish relations, while Israeli President Isaac Herzog offered formal condolences. However, former Israeli ambassador Dror Eydar criticized the Pope’s comments on Gaza, labeling them as biased.
The Pope’s passing has reignited discussion around his succession. Two prominent figures from the Middle East Cardinal Louis Raphael Sako of Iraq and Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem are seen as potential candidates. Both are known for their deep involvement in interfaith efforts and their moral leadership in conflict zones.
Pope Francis will be remembered by many in the Muslim world as a global symbol of compassion, dialogue, and unity.
