Manchester: The British Muslim Heritage Centre (BMHC) in Manchester stands as one of Europe’s leading institutions celebrating Muslim contributions to history, science, and culture.
Housed in a historic Gothic building, the centre serves as both a sanctuary and an educational hub, especially amid rising hate crimes and hostility. “We want to showcase and shout from the rooftops the amazing work Muslims have done throughout history,” says community project manager Helina Malik.
Educating Through History
Exhibits at the centre highlight pivotal Muslim contributions, from Ibn Al-Haytham’s invention of the pinhole camera to Al-Khwarizmi’s development of algebra. Visitors also learn about lesser-known figures, such as Sake Dean Mahomed, who introduced shampoo to Britain.
The Stories of Sacrifice exhibition sheds light on Muslim soldiers’ roles in global conflicts, fostering a sense of belonging among young British Muslims. “Many children are surprised to learn that Muslims played a key part in shaping Great Britain,” says Malik.
A Safe Haven and Community Resource
BMHC also serves as a third-party reporting centre for hate crimes, supporting victims who may be reluctant to approach the police. The centre has itself faced threats, but its commitment remains unwavering.
Beyond education, it provides healthcare awareness programs, housing for the homeless, and a Muslim radio station. Looking ahead, the centre has ambitious plans, including an £80 million expansion featuring an interactive museum and an Islamic garden.
As Manchester prepares for Ramadan, BMHC continues to be a beacon of unity, knowledge, and resilience. “We have a vision,” says Malik, “and exciting times ahead.”
