January: California’s Lateefah Simon has officially taken office as a member of the 119th Congress, becoming the fourth Muslim American to serve in the US House of Representatives. She joins Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar, and André Carson, marking a milestone in Muslim representation in Congress.

Simon, a prominent community organizer from the San Francisco Bay Area, succeeds Barbara Lee, who vacated her seat to run for the US Senate. Her career spans advocacy in criminal justice reform, leadership in public service, and membership on the boards of California’s state university system and the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system.

A Significant Step Forward
Robert McCaw, Government Affairs Director for the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), hailed Simon’s election as a victory for American Muslims amid increasing Islamophobia.

“Her presence in Congress, alongside her colleagues, is a testament to the resilience of the Muslim community and its unwavering commitment to justice,” McCaw said.

Committees and Focus Areas
Simon has joined key committees, including:
• Oversight and Accountability
• Small Business
• Several caucuses addressing progressive and social justice issues.

Her election underscores the growing influence and diversity of Muslim Americans in public office, reflecting their contributions to justice, equity, and representation in the United States.
