In response to the rapid advancements in science and technology, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has unveiled a groundbreaking initiative to foster scientific and technological progress among its member states. The initiative, spearheaded by the Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation (COMSTECH), seeks to address shared challenges, promote sustainable development, and enhance self-reliance across the Islamic world.

High-Level Collaboration
The launch event, held in Islamabad, Pakistan, was attended by OIC ambassadors, diplomats, university leaders, scientists, and students. OIC Secretary-General Hissein Brahim Taha emphasized the importance of collaboration to tackle critical challenges, including healthcare, agriculture, energy, and education.

Key Features of the Initiative
1. Fellowship and Scholarships for Palestinians: Focused on empowering Palestinian youth through education and skills development.
2. Support for African Member States: Targeting sustainable solutions to challenges faced by African nations.
3. Combating Brain Drain: Encouraging self-reliance in technology while fostering local expertise.
4. Strategic Development: Leveraging collective expertise to address global and regional issues through solidarity and innovation.

COMSTECH’s Role
Iqbal Choudhary, Coordinator-General of COMSTECH, highlighted the committee’s efforts in mobilizing expertise across the Islamic world, aiming for sustainable development and technological self-sufficiency.

OIC’s Broader Vision
Founded in 1969, the OIC represents 57 member states across four continents. Its charter promotes solidarity, cooperation, and global harmony, operating through committees focused on science, technology, economy, trade, and culture. Specialized institutions like the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) and Islamic World Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) further its mission to advance the interests of the Islamic world.

This initiative underscores the OIC’s commitment to innovation, unity, and progress, positioning the Islamic world to navigate contemporary challenges and thrive in the global arena.
