Patiala, Punjab: In a notable development, faculty members from Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) have been re-elected to key positions in the Indian History Congress (IHC). Prof. Shireen Moosvi has been re-elected as Vice President, while Prof. Syed Ali Nadeem Rezavi and Prof. Manvendra Kumar Pundhir, both from AMU’s Department of History, have retained their roles as Secretary and Joint Secretary, respectively.

Additionally, Prof. Irfan Habib and Dr. Shamim Akhtar will continue to serve on the IHC Executive Committee, and Prof. Syed Jabir Raza has been re-elected as Treasurer.

Former Director General of the Archaeological Survey of India and eminent archaeologist Prof. Gautam Sengupta has succeeded Prof. Aditya Mukherjee as General President of the IHC.

Prof. Rezavi shared that the elections took place during the 83rd Session of the Indian History Congress, held at Punjabi University, Patiala, Punjab, from December 28–30, 2024.

Highlights of the Session
The inaugural session was graced by Harjot Singh Bains, Education Minister of Punjab, with Prof. Richard Eaton as the guest of honor. Other dignitaries included Prof. Narinder Kaur Multani, Dean of Academic Affairs at Punjabi University, and Dr. Sanjiv Puri.

The event featured six simultaneous sessions focusing on diverse aspects of history, including ancient, medieval, modern, and contemporary Indian history, as well as the history of other countries and archaeology. Specialized panels addressed topics such as Punjab’s past and present, social history, urban history, and Dalit history.

Keynote and Lectures
Prof. Irfan Habib delivered a powerful keynote address, critically examining attempts by right-wing historians to distort history to align with Hindutva ideology.

The Prof. S.C. Misra Memorial Lecture was delivered by Prof. Yogesh Snehi, while the IHC symposium featured lectures by Prof. Seema Bawa, Dr. Anjali Guhan Gulia, and Prof. Urvi Mukhopadhyay.

Participation and Organization
The session witnessed the presentation of over 885 research papers, with participation from approximately 1,300 delegates. Prof. Muhammad Idris, the Local Secretary, led a team of dedicated volunteers and senior teachers to successfully organize the event.

Founded in 1935, the Indian History Congress is the largest professional association of historians in South Asia, boasting around 35,000 members. With more than 2,000 delegates participating annually, the IHC is committed to advancing secular and scientific historiography, organizing annual sessions, and publishing proceedings regularly.

The event concluded with renewed commitments to promoting historical research and scholarship in India.
