Jodhpur: Foundation stone was laid for Maulana Azad University at the Bujhawar village near the city on October 2 by Rajasthan Chief Minister Mr Ashok Gehlot. The University was sanctioned last month after a bill was passed by the Rajasthan Assembly following persistent pressure from the Marwar Muslim Education and Welfare Society.
Speaking at the occasion, Mr. Gehlot said Muslims can become effective organ of the mainstream only by securing modern education and skills together with their religious instructions. He said the new university would impart education from first standard till the doctorate in all disciplines together with technical and professional courses. He announced a grant of Rs. 10 crore for the university from the Minority Welfare Department of the State Government and hoped that additional grants would be sanctioned from the Union Government’s Ministry of Minority Affairs.
The ceremony held under the chairmanship of State’s Health Minister Imamuddin Ahmed Khan alias Durru Miyan and was attended by Secretary for Minority Affair in the Union Ministry Lalit K. Panwar, ministers Jitendra Singh, Badriram Jakhar, RPCC president Chandra Bhan, legislator Zakir Hussain, Rajasthan Wakf Board Chairman Liyakath Ali, State Milli council chief Abdul Qaiyum Akhtar, Chancellor Dr. Kumar Rajeev, Marwar Muslim Society secretary Abdul Aziz, Finance Controller Haji Ishaq, and University advisory board members Abbadullah Qureshi, Shabbir Ahmed Khilji, Shaukath Ansari, Mohammed Ali, and Shahar Khateeb Haji Mohammed Ansari were present. Society General Secretary Mohammed Atique welcomed the gathering.
The University comes under the Luni village Panchayat.
