The Urdu Book Mela organized by the National  Council for Promotion of Urdu Language (NCPUL) at Malegaon in the first week of January 2014, registered a record sale of Urdu books to the tune of Rs. 75 lakh in eight days. The sales surpassed even the sales recorded by the Mela at Mumbai previously. Malegaon happens to be a powerloom town with a concentration of Muslims mainly speaking Urdu. The town has several Urdu medium schools and is an active centre for literary activities.
