Stanford University, in collaboration with Elsevier’s Scopus database, has recognized 2,503 Iranian researchers in the top 2% of the world’s most-cited scientists. This marks a significant rise from 1,870 in 2023. The ranking is determined by a composite score (C-score), which includes various factors like total citations and h-index, with or without self-citations. Researchers are classified into 22 fields and 176 sub-fields, and those ranked in the top 2% of their sub-field are included.
Iran ranks 32nd globally in the 2024 Nature Index Research Leaders report, with the University of Tehran and Sharif University of Technology among its top institutions. The country’s highest ranking is in Physical Sciences, where it placed 27th globally.
Additionally, Iran ranks 14th worldwide for most-cited universities and research institutes in the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) database, with 134 institutions represented across 19 subject areas, making it second among Islamic nations after Turkey.
