The French government has officially included the role of an imam in the national job registry, marking a major step in structuring religious leadership. Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau announced this at the French Islamic Forum (FORIF) on February 18.
This move formalizes employment contracts and job descriptions for imams, including those serving in hospitals and the military. Retailleau emphasized trust between the government and Muslim representatives while reaffirming the community’s rejection of radical ideologies.
To combat rising Islamophobia evidenced by 173 recorded attacks in 2024 the government will launch a complaint platform to support victims and ensure justice.
