Kampung Pelangi village was a non-descript village in Samarang region of Indonesia. It had 232 houses which lay at the banks of a muddy river. The local village council released a fund of 17,000 pounds (equivalent to 30 crore Indonesian rupiah) for a complete makeover of the village. The villagers brought out the best in them and cleaned up the village and painted all the houses in rainbow colours.
The work was taken up by the Indonesian Builders Association with the help of the local mayor and the local people. It was completed in April this year. Not only were the houses painted with coloured stripes, but walls were decorated with art. The images displayed over Instagram made it an instant hit and tourists and visitors from around the world have begun flocking to the village.
