New Delhi: The National Commission for Minorities has decided to recommend driver Saleem Sheikh for conferring the National Award for Bravery for saving the lives of 50 Amarnath yatris. The bus had been attacked by terrorists on July 10 killing six of them. Announcement to this effect was made by Mr. Gayorul Hassan Rizvi, the newly appointed chairman of the National Commission for Minorities. Sheikh had driven the bus without stopping even while one of its tyres had been shot and gone flat. He drove the bus on the flat tyres for one kilometer.
Mr. Rizvi said the new toll free helpline of the Commission (No: 1800110088) was proving helpful in reaching out to individuals from minority communities who would like to register their grievances. The helpline registered 36 complaints in the first week of operation.
