Lahore: Noted Urdu novelist Banu Qudsia died here on February 4. She was 88. She was ailing for some time.
Qudsia was born in Ferozepur (now in the Indian side of Punjab) in 1928 and migrated to Lahore during the Partition. She secured a degree in Urdu literature from Kinnaird College Lahore. She was conferred official honours of Sitara e Imtiyaz in 2003 and Hilal e Imtiyaz in 2010. She was buried besides her husband in the graveyard in Lahore. Qudsia is best known for her novel Raja Gidh. Qudsia also wrote for television and stage in both Urdu and Punjabi languages. Her play Aadhi Baat has been called “a classic”. Qudsia’s novel Raja Gidh (The King Buzzard) is considered a modern Urdu classic. Among her more prominent writings are Aatish-i-zer-i-paa, AikDin, Amer Bail, Asay Pasay, Chahar Chaman, Chhotaa Sheher Baray Log, Footpath ki Ghaas, Haasil Ghaat and Hawa Kay Naam.
