Aligarh: The management of Aligarh Muslim University recently clarified that removing the Quran Ayah from the AMU monogram was not a political decision but to avoid disrespect to Quranic verses. However, the monogram with the Quran would continue to be etched on AMU degrees, diplomas, and other documents.
The removal of Quranic ayah from the monogram has triggered an outrage in the AMU fraternity and the Muslim community, who see the present AMU dispensation as appeasing powers that be.
Putting to rest the controversy, the AMU said in a statement that it was an old decision taken by the Executive Council (EC) through its resolution, dated October 4, 2005, and resolution no. 15, dated January 1, 2005, resolved that “the monogram with Quran Ayah on the notices of meetings, invitation cards, pamphlets, examination, and test answer books, calendars, file covers, project and lab reports, examination and admission forms and letterheads will not be used to avoid disrespect of the religious verse due to the ephemeral nature of these documents”.
However, a monogram with five stars in place of the Ayah in the circle may be used in such cases.
“The monogram with the Quranic verse will continue to be etched on AMU degrees, diplomas, certificates, final year mark sheets, character certificates of the students issued by Dean Students’ Welfare, Sherwani (Traditional knee-length coat), badges, AMU flag, buildings, glow and signboards, books, monographs, diary, PG Dissertations, and PhD thesis”, said AMU Registrar, Abdul Hamid (IPS).
The notice issued by the Registrar calls for strict adherence by all concerned.
