Sumbul Siddiqui, 31, has become the first Muslim mayor in the American state of Massachusetts, getting elected in Cambridge. She was elected unanimously on the first ballot by her fellow councilors. Following the vote, the packed chamber stood and showered her with applause. Siddiqui holds a bachelor’s degree from Brown University and a law degree from Northwestern Pritzker School of Law. Between college and law school, she served as an AmeriCorps fellow at New Profit, a Boston nonprofit that works on improving social mobility for children, families and their communities.
