We often hear the word “SHOULD” when discussing the challenges faced by the Ummah. It’s easy to say what should be done, but putting it into action is far more difficult. This mindset of endless “SHOULDs” has paralyzed us, preventing real change.
When you think about the issues facing the Ummah, the “SHOULD” virus takes over, asking who “SHOULD” be responsible or who “SHOULD” fix the problem. Before long, you’re overwhelmed by statements like:
• The government SHOULD do this.
• Muslim leaders and Jamaats SHOULD take action.
• People SHOULD behave like this.
But these “SHOULDs” are outside your control. You feel like you’ve done your duty by simply identifying the problem, then rest easy, believing you can do no more.
Whether it’s speeches, seminars, or articles, many offer solutions that end with endless “SHOULDs.” This approach has made minds sick, with people shifting responsibility elsewhere, thus absolving themselves from action.
If you truly want change, bury the “SHOULDs” and start acting today.
Example: Stop Lying
Consider the issue of lying, a widespread problem in the Ummah, despite the Hadith stating that a Muslim cannot be a liar. Instead of blaming others and listing things that SHOULD happen, focus on what you can control.
Ask yourself: Can you stop lying for just one week? Teach your family about the importance of honesty, share the message, and expand it to your community. Gradually, this small action can grow, bringing real change.
Facing Collective Challenges
Our community is plagued by issues such as dowry, poverty, sectarian divisions, and social injustices. Listing SHOULDs for these issues is endless, and it won’t solve the problems.
Instead, take action:
• Start a campaign against dowry.
• Promote education in your local area.
• Address strained relationships through counseling.
Even with limited resources, you can bring about change by focusing on what is within your capacity. Don’t wait for others to act begin where you are and involve those around you.
Focus on One Goal at a Time
Choose one issue, devote your time, energy, and resources to it, and inspire others to do the same. Even if your efforts bring about a small change, when multiplied across many people, it can lead to significant transformation.
Are you ready to act?
