The Sharjah Archaeology Authority (SAA) announced that three key sites in Sharjah Dibba Al Hisn Fort and Settlement, Fili Fort, and Wadi Shees have been added to the Islamic World Heritage List by ICESCO. This recognition underscores the cultural and historical importance of these locations in preserving Islamic and human heritage.
Dibba Al Hisn Fort, a major hub of trade and cultural exchange for over five centuries, contains artifacts from China, India, and Europe, reflecting its significant role in regional commerce. Fili Fort, positioned strategically, played a crucial role in safeguarding water resources and facilitating trade routes between Al Dhaid and Oman, supported by its historic aflaj irrigation system. Wadi Shees, known for its natural beauty and ancient irrigation systems, is home to rare wildlife, making it an important site for environmental and scientific study.
This achievement was part of the 12th meeting of ICESCO’s Heritage Committee, held in Shusha, Azerbaijan. The committee registered 91 historical sites and cultural elements, including the three from Sharjah, for their contributions to Islamic heritage.
Eisa Yousif, Director-General of SAA, expressed gratitude to Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah, for his ongoing support in preserving the emirate’s heritage, emphasizing Sharjah’s dedication to protecting its cultural identity and contributing to global heritage conservation.
This recognition marks a significant milestone in Sharjah’s ongoing efforts to preserve its historical and cultural legacy for future generations.
