Bengaluru: The Students Islamic Organisation (SIO) of Karnataka presented the Model Madrasa Award to six madrassas (Islamic theological schools) in Karnataka on November 19. They are: Madrasa Baithul Uloom, Sindagi; Madrasa Ziyaul Uloom, Kandlur; Iqra Arabic School, Mangaluru; Houz e Ilmiya Baqirul Uloom, Alipur; Jamiya Islamiya, Bhatkal; and Darul Umoor (Tipu Sultan Study and Research Centre), Srirangapatnam. The awards were presented by Mr. U. T. Khader, Karnataka Minister for Health and Family Welfare.
Educationist Neeranjan Aradhya; Islamic scholar Mohd. Kunni; Maulana Waheeduddin Khan Umri of Madrasa at Kambipur; Muslim Muttehada Mahaz Secretary S. M. Iqbal; and M. Y. Thouseef, SIO zonal president also participated in the award ceremony.
The SIO report on madrassas recommends introduction of English and Kannada in madrassas situated in the State; setting up a body to regulate madrassas; extension of Pratibha Karanji programme of the State Government to madrassas; fixation of a duration and schedule for Alimiyat course; fixing the salary at Rs. 15,000 for the madrassa teachers; and provision of playground and sport equipment to madrassas.
