Halima Yacub, 58, became the first woman Speaker of the Singapore Parliament. She replaced Michael Paimar who resigned after a scandal. Halima of Indian origin had held the portfolio of Social and Family Welfare which she quit to assume the new post. Halima who was earlier an advocate had been elected the Member of Parliament on the ticket of ruling Peoples Action Party.
