Unique Initiative by Salaam Centre
Salaam Centre here has launched a unique programme to remove ignorance and misgivings about Islam by placing brochures and booklets on Islam in attractive holders and frames in auto rickshaws in the city. The Centre has selected 50 such vehicles, the most favourite means of transport within the city, to fix such holders. One among these auto drivers is Nisar Ahmed, who carries several Certificates of honesty from the Bangalore city Police Commissioner (he has returned to customers valuables, laptops, cash and ornaments worth lakhs of rupees who forgot to collect their belongings before getting off the vehicle). The Centre gathered nearly 30 drivers for a consultation on the project last month. They were told about the tenets of Islam and attributes of a Muslim and agreed to carry such books and literature and also personify values such as honesty, efficiency, dignity and respect for users etc in their own selves. Salaam Centre Chairman Syed Hamid Mohsin told Islamic Voice that in several cases, the auto drivers took copies of the Holy Quran and its translations to customers who wanted to go through books on Islam.
