Mubeen Munawar, a poet, has been appointed the Chairman of the Karnataka State Urdu Academy. Mainly a writer of Naats (elegies of the Holy Prophet), Munawar is considered close to Mr. Zameer Ahmed Khan, Minister for Minority Affairs. Presiding over a meeting of the Academy members, Munawar said he would focus upon taking up unimplemented schemes from the tenure of the past chairmen and will direct the staff to put up a website of the Academy. He said the Academy has Rs. 1.60 cr. under its allocation, which will be utilized to organize mushairas, seminars and workshops.
