Aligarh: Sir Syed Day, celebrating the birth anniversary of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, was commemorated with enthusiasm at various centers, colleges, residential halls, and schools of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).
The function began at the AMU Centre in Malappuram, Kerala, where Shri A. A. Rahim, a member of the Rajya Sabha and the AMU Court, inaugurated the celebrations. He emphasized AMU’s commitment to secularism and rational thinking, highlighting its role as a beacon of inclusive education.
Following the inauguration, Prof. Mohammed Shakeel, Vice Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia, delivered an insightful address on the history and contributions of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, urging attendees to preserve his legacy. Chief Guest Sayyid Munavarali Shihab Thangal encouraged students to embrace Sir Syed’s mission of promoting education and recalled Sir Syed’s efforts in uplifting the Muslim community and facilitating access to higher education for individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Dr. Faisal K.P., Director of the Centre, emphasized Sir Syed’s importance in reconciling tradition and modernity, reminding students that education is not just about knowledge but about creating responsible citizens who embody integrity, compassion, and courage. He expressed pride in the AMU Centre, Malappuram, for upholding Sir Syed’s ideals while striving for academic excellence and inclusivity.
Mr. Ghalib Nashter, General Convenor of the Sir Syed Day Celebration, provided an overview of Sir Syed’s life. Dr. Naseema P.K. from the Department of Law also addressed the gathering, while Mr. Mohammed Ahazam Khan, Assistant Registrar, welcomed the guests with an opening address. Dr. Mohammed Basheer K., Joint Convenor of the Sir Syed Day Celebration, proposed a vote of thanks. The program was conducted by Dr. Blessytha Kamrudheen and Mr. Syed Ahmad Saad.
At Abdullah Hall, AMU, rich tributes were paid to Sir Syed Ahmad Khan. AMU Vice Chancellor Prof. Naima Khatoon and Prof. Neelima Gupta, Vice-Chancellor of Dr. Hari Singh Gour University, graced the occasion. Prof. Gupta reflected on her long association with Aligarh and the university’s evolution into a prestigious institution. She emphasized the need for holistic education that integrates academic excellence with character building and cultural enrichment.
Dr. Ghazala Naheed, Provost of Abdullah Hall, welcomed the guests and highlighted the significance of education in advancing Sir Syed’s legacy. The evening included cultural performances, including ghazals, and Ms. Falak Naaz delivered an insightful speech on Sir Syed’s life and legacy. The program concluded with a vote of thanks by Ms. Ansharah Kaiyoom.
The AMU’s Ahmadi School for the Visually Challenged also celebrated Sir Syed’s 207th birth anniversary, with AMU Vice Chancellor Prof. Naima Khatoon interacting with students and appreciating their performances. The school organized various literary, cultural, and sports events during the Sir Syed week celebrations, including essay writing, quizzes, and competitions.
On the evening of October 17, the main function began with Qirat by Maryam of class I, followed by a welcome song and school anthem. The students presented a special skit titled “Hausla” and an action song. Chief Guest Prof. Roomana N. Siddiqui praised Sir Syed Ahmad Khan’s contributions and lauded the school’s growth. Prof. Nishat Afroz and Mr. Saad Hameed also addressed the students, motivating them and expressing admiration for the school campus.
The Sir Syed Day function at AMU City Girls’ High School featured a series of engaging events, with students presenting a welcome song. Mr. Javed Akhtar, Principal of the school, welcomed esteemed guests, including Chief Guest Mr. Rizwanur Rahman and Guest of Honour Prof. Abid Ali Khan. Mr. Rahman delivered a stirring speech on Sir Syed’s foresight, emphasizing the relevance of his mission today. The event concluded with student speeches and was conducted by Sahar Naqvi and Zarreen Naaz, with Ms. Urooja Khan delivering a vote of thanks.
