Angkor Wat Temples

Angkor Wat is the largest religious monument in the world. It is a complex of Hindu temples which was later used as a Buddhist shrine. It was built by King Suryavarman in 12th century AD. He was king of Khmer kingdom which is now part of Cambodia or Kampuchea. Its outer wall runs to a length of 3.6 kilometres. Angkor Wat is symbol of Cambodia and is part of the country’s flag. Thousands of tourists visit it every day.
For centuries it lay hidden inside thick forests. Several big trees had grown over it taking the stones into their grip.
Archaeological Survey of India was engaged in renovation and restoration of this temple from 1986 to 1992.
Its wall are engraved with pictures of Hindu deities. The temple complex is known for its grandeur. A French traveler Henri Mouhot who visited it in mid 19th century made it popular in the outside world. From then on the effort to conserve it began.
