Sri Shankara Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (SSCHRC) is an initiative undertaken by Sri Shankara Cancer Foundation. SSCHRC is a 250 bedded state-of- the-art, not for profit, charitable comprehensive cancer hospital located in the heart of Bangalore. The hospital provides state-of-the-art treatment to all cancer patients at affordable costs irrespective of caste, creed and socio-economic status, to make treatment affordable by reducing the basic cost of treatment. The hospital also aims to reduce incidence of cancer in the rural areas and detect cancer in the early stages through various interventional initiatives. Well equipped departments of radiotherapy, radio diagnosis and interventional radiology, nuclear medicine, blood transfusion and laboratory facilities including anatomical pathology and microbiology sections with fully automated equipment are all operational and aiding in quick diagnosis. Departments of medical oncology, surgical oncology and radiation oncology led by eminent doctors are delivering expert treatment. Pain and Palliative Care Unit, physiotherapy, rehabilitation and speech therapy, nutrition and dietetics unit, meditation and holistic services unit, psycho-oncology unit and yoga therapy helps in delivering wholesome treatment to the patients. Neuro oncology department with state-of-the-art operating microscope and neuro ““operating endoscope was commissioned recently. Community Oncology Wing with preventive oncology unit, tele-oncology unit, peripheral cancer screening centres will be operational very soon.
The second state ““of-the art linear accelerator “Triple F True Beam” and ‘wide-bore 1.5 Tesla MR RT” equipment, first in Southeast Asia was dedicated to the patients by the union minister for chemicals and fertilizers and Member of Parliament, Bangalore South Ananth Kumar on December 6, 2015. Adding to the event of the inauguration of the two state-of-the-art equipment, SSCHRC also organized a scientific program , “the Sri Shankara Conclave on Uro-Oncology and MR based planning. This conclave brought together eminent specialists in Oncology and Radiology from different parts of the country to discuss the use of these advanced modalities in diagnosis and treatment of cancers of the cervix, prostrate and urinary bladder whose incidence is increasing in the country.
Triple F True Beam is a truly innovative state-of-the-art advanced radiotherapy machine. It has the ability to deliver high precision radiotherapy, in a very short time, very accurately. It allows for higher dose of radiation to be delivered accurately to the cancerous cells avoiding the critical normal tissues. This will result in high cure rates and at the same time minimize the complications. Since the radiation time is very less, the patients are more comfortable and their treatment time is shorter, with its ability to deliver high doses, the treatment can be completed in a few days, instead of few weeks, which is of great benefit to the patients.
Ingenia MR-RT (MRI) equipment, which is the first of its kind in South Asia, is uniquely designed for radiotherapy planning. It has a wide bore which reduces patient discomfort, making them less claustrophobic and comes with precision lasers to accurately position the patient. It comes equipped with state-of-the-art software for accurate diagnosis and for advanced radiotherapy planning to treat tumours such as brain, prostrate and cervix accurately.
