New Delhi: The Centre for Culture, Media and Governance of Jamia Millia Islamia has been approved by the University Grants Commission as “Centre with Potential Excellence in Particular Areas” on “Strengthening Media and Communication Studies in India” during XII Plan for the period for five years (2016-2021). The Centre for Culture, Media and Governance is configured as a focal point of teaching, research, training and Policy Advocacy in the domain of Interdisciplinary Communication Studies in India and South Asia. The Centre recognizes that such a vision, with communication as a frame of reference, cannot be realized within existing disciplinary confines. The Centre recognizes the need for an interdisciplinary commitment because communication plays a pivotal role in the organization of Institutional forms, symbolic system and pattern of everyday life throughout the Indian subcontinent. Research on communication is closely linked to questions of public policy and the state, of economic and technological expansion, and more broadly to social and cultural issues. The Centre identifies three interlocking areas identified for Basic and Applied research: The objectives of the Centre is to study the interlink-age between media and governance in their various forms, at different sites and their grounding in wider political, economic and historical processes. The aim is to explore the growing complexity in the governance of media institutions i.e. regulatory reform, best practice and legal instruments that shape media justice, access and equity. The idea is to track experience of governance through communication system i.e. the creation of procedures, norms leading to transparency and accountability; inclusiveness and participation, as also the underlying notions of government mentality, sovereignty and communication rights. The focus is on developing pedagogical innovations in both academia and professional training. The Centre aims to initiate debate, share research and encourage dialogue between academia, government, civil society and industry at the local, national and global levels. The Centre strives to work as a think tank in addressing the dilemmas of governance in the new epoch of mediated culture.
