The northern Uttar Pradesh town’s fortunes seems to be upswing. Once the capital of the Nawabs of Rampur, the town is likely to get a massive facelift with a Rs. 2.5 billion project set to begin. Local MLA and minister in the new Samajwadi Party Government told media recently that all drains in the city would be reconstructed and the under-construction of Palika Mall on Topekhana Road will be
completed at a cost of Rs. 7 crore. He said Rs. 2 crore has been allocated for the development of Maulana Mohammad Ali Museum and Research Centre. Azam Khan said all important roads will be widened and the jails will be shifted to the outskirts of the town. A new power station with a 220KVA capacity will be set up in the town. Delhi based firm has prepared a d e v e l o p m e n t plan for the city which has been approved. Rampur boasts of several palaces (see picture) of the erstwhile nawabs and the famous Raza Library (see picture) which is a treasure house of rare oriental manuscripts.
Rampur has the distinction of electing India’s first education minister Maulana Abul Kalam Azad in 1952 and 1957. Currently, it is represented in the UP Assembly by Azam Khan who won with a record margin of 69,000 votes.
