Bengaluru: “Reading Stars”, a unique programme to promote reading habits among school children, was launched here on September 6 by a group headed by Ms. Shahnaz Sultana, a visiting faculty in an engineering college. The first school that opted for the programme is Crescent School in Basavanagudi in the southern part of the city. Under the programme, Crescent School had dedicated a space for children to browse through latest newspapers and journals and has set up bookshelves in 18 classrooms, with picture books, novels, fairytales, story books and other reading material.
The inaugural function was addressed by Mr. Krishnamoorthy, a former principal of Kendriya Vidyalaya; Mr. M. A. Siraj, a Bengaluru based journalist; Ms. Shahnaz Sultana, the coordinator of the programme; and Mr. Saeed Shariff, chairman of the Crescent group of institutions, which runs a PU college and a Degree College.
