Lt. Gen. Zameruddin Shah is the new vice chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University. He will hold the post for five years till 2017 when he completes five years. He was one among the three nominees recommended by the AMU Court in March. The appointment was made by the President of India in her capacity as the visitor of the University. Lt. Gen. Shah was Deputy Chief of Army Staff between 2006 and 2008. He served the Indian Army for nearly 40 years and is currently a member of the Armed Forces Tribunal. A highly decorated officer, he was awarded the Pram Vashisht Sewa Medal. He was born in Sardana of Meerut district in 1948 and was educated in institutions such as St. Joseph’s College Nainital, National Defence Academy and Indian Military Academy and had joined the Indian Army on June 9, 1968. He took Masters degree in Defence Studies and Management from Madras University in 1980. Film actor Naseeruddin Shah is his younger brother. His family has been a major financial contributor to the Aligarh Muslim University. He headed the Officers Training
Academy in Chennai between 1972 and 1974.
