Safdar Hashmi Award for Asghar Wajahat: Noted playwright Asghar Wajahat has been nominated for the Safdar Hashmi Award by the Ramnika Foundation. Wajahat is among the six writers nominated for various awards by the Foundation. It carries Rs. 21,000. The Birsa Munda Award will be given to tribal leader Mahadeo Topo. Anita Bharti has been named the Savitribai Phule awardee. The awards will be given in February 2015.
Labeed Shafe from Mangaluru has been appointed the President of the Students Islamic Organisation (SIO) at its consultative body meeting held at Belgaavi on December 10. He is an MA in Arabic. Maaz Salman Maniyar has been appointed secretary for the two year term. He has an M.Tech degree. Md. Aqueel has been appointed campus secretary while Abdul Kabeer will be Public Relations secretary for the next two years.

Shamsur Rahman Farooqui, Urdu critic and NRI author Jhumpa Lahiri were shortlisted among the five authors from South Asia for the DSC South Asian Literary Award which carries $50,000. The shortlisted nominees were announced on November 29. Farooqui, a former Postmaster General of India has been taken in the list for his novel The Mirror of beauty while Lahiri’s novel The Loveland won her the position. The five include Pakistani novelist Bilal Tanveer and Kamila Shamsi.

Appointed: Mr. Habil Khorakiwala of the Wockhardt Healthcare group has been appointed the Chancellor of Jamia Hamdard. He will hold the office till 2019. A successful businessman, Khokariwala holds a a Masters degree in Management from Harvard Business School and was conferred doctorate by Purdue University.

Suriya Bano, Headmistress of the Government Urdu Higher Primary School, Ashoknagar, Bengaluru, was given the Best Teacher National Award for the year 2013-14. The award was presented to her by the President of India, Pranab Mukherjee on September 5, 2014. Suriya Bano was given the award for her remarkable contribution towards helping children from the downtrodden areas in the city, to step into school and get value-based education in the Government Urdu Higher Primary School. Beginning her career as a teacher in 1978, she has motivated children to acquire education.
