We need trustworthy companions who will support us at every juncture of our life. According to the Quran, these trustworthy companions are none other than angels. The Quran guides us on this point. It says:
As for those who say, ‘Our Lord is God,’ and then remain steadfast, the angels will descend on them, saying, ‘Have no fear and do not grieve. Rejoice in the good news of the Garden that you have been promised. We are your companions in this life and in the Hereafter. Therein you shall have all that your soul desires, and therein you shall have all that you ask for.’ (Quran: 41:30-31)
From this we learn that among the greatest blessings we could have is having angels as our companions. But the question is: How can we win the companionship of angels?
The answer to this can be understood from an incident from the life of Prophet Muhammad.
One day, the Prophet was sitting with some of his Companions when a man came up to them and insulted Abu Bakr, who was one of the Prophet’s closest companions. Abu Bakr however remained silent. The man insulted him again, and this time too Abu Bakr did not say a thing. But when the man insulted him for the third time, Abu Bakr reacted negatively. As soon as the Prophet heard Abu Bakr’s response, he got up to leave.
Abu Bakr was surprised. He asked the Prophet, “Why are you leaving, O Prophet, are you angry with me?”
The Prophet said: “When the man was insulting you, an angel came down from Heaven, and the angel was answering on your behalf. But when you took revenge, a devil came down. I did not want to be in the companionship of the devil, therefore I got up to leave.” (Source: Sunan Abu Dawud)
This incident from the life of the Prophet tells us that whenever we are faced with a provocative situation we have an opportunity to seek the companionship of angels. We should therefore refrain from giving a negative response lest we drive the angels away and lose their companionship.
A person who is completely free of negative thoughts will develop himself into a positive personality in the fullest sense of the word. This is the easiest way to win the companionship of angels. With the companionship of angels a person will be able to lead a spiritual life and follow a path that leads directly to Paradise.
