Come September, creativity will find a new destination in Bangalore. ‘White Pencil’, the school for creative design, will throw open its portals for students in the City. Part of the Bangalore Institute of Management ((BIM), under a new managing body, the school will be offering Diploma courses in Fashion Designing, Gem and Jewellery Designing and Interior Designing.
The BIM was set up in 2009 under the Mrinalini Education Trust and has been imparting MBA for the last five years. The Institute which recently passed under a new management, will be launching the new diploma courses from September. The BIM is affiliated to the University of Mysore.
The new management proposes to take up the three courses in view of the huge demand for trained manpower in the field of creativity. The apparel industry has emerged as the second largest employer after agriculture in India and will be providing job opportunities for two million people by 2016. It is guessed that the industry’s hunger for trained personnel is all likely to devour the output however huge it might be.
Similarly, gem and jewellery designing is a $45 billion industry in India which is the largest consumer of gold and largest processor of gems in the world. It provides self-employment for 20 lakh people and exports 95% of the world diamonds. Interior Designing too is the new rage across the cities. It is a $ 40 billion industry with deficiency of trained personnel in India. According to Mr. Kishoore Madappa, Chief Executive Officer of the BIM as well as the ‘White Pencil School for Creative Design’, the sector would throw up 1.4 million job opportunities by 2016.
With the change in the management, Mr. Naveed has taken over as the Chairman of the Institute with Mr. Mohan, Mr. Faizan and Ms. Bhavani joining the team as the new trustees of the Mrinalini Education Trust. Naveed who heads the Kool Nest Group, which is a major name in commercial air-conditioning, has been a successful businessman and is keen to inject new dynamism into the BIM and produce highly trained professionals through the new Diploma courses.
The four-storey campus of the Bangalore Institute of Management in Thimappa Reddy Layout on Bannerghatta Road has been equipped with latest infrastructure. The classrooms have been furnished with state-of-the-art designing tables meant for imparting training of the trades that comprise practicals to the tune of two-thirds of the tenure of the course. Sewing machines have been imported from China while the library has been stocked up with 5,000 books pertaining to the three trades.
‘White Pencil’ is tying up with the relevant industries for full fledged campus placements. Mr. Madappa says the intake will range from 30 to 35 in each of the three Diploma courses and the full-time faculty is already in place. He is also keen to introduce shortly a Diploma in Facility Management, a one year course that trains personnel to manage large workplaces with skills required to oversee management of floor space, transport, warehouse, electrical installations, canteens, security and logistics. He says Facility Managers were in great demand in the sunrise sectors of Industries such as IT, Pharmaceuticals and Biotech. He says basically an engineering graduate will be eligible for the one-year Diploma in Facility Management.
